Annual Reunion of the High School Alumni
December 27, 1899
|
Nowhere else can be found that brotherly regard, that enduring fraternalism that exists between alumni of the same High school. In a High school one becomes acquainted with the entire school. A High school is a community and the friendships there formed are usually long-lived. The thirteenth annual reunion of the Grand Rapids High School Alumni Association was held in Elks’lodge rooms and the battalion armory last evening. |

After the addresses Mrs. McInnes orchestra furnished music until 10:15 p.m. Then the dancing began with music furnished by Prof. A. G. Crawford on the pipe organ. A museum was prepared exhibiting about 20 paintings by Fred Church, the famous artist. Also several paintings by Larry Earle, a close friend of Mr. Church and another alumnuw Other exhibits were the old High school records of the years 1853-1854, pictures of ex-Principals Chesebro, Strong, Daniels and Greeson; engravings of the buildings, and interior scenes of the University of Michigan, their banjo and football clubs, picture of various High school clubs and football teams, copies of the Helios and a clapper from the High school bell, which was stolen by a band of students a year ago last October. The bell has hung in the High school since 1851 and has lost five clappers. One room was set apart for the registering of the alumni present and during the evening the following names were placed on the class books. In all 226 people signed their names to the registry books. It may safely be estimated that 400 attended the reunion. The class of 1893 was the first class to spring its class yell. At 10:30 Elks’ hall was startled by the following howl, rendered at the very highest pitch of a dozen healthy voices: "Boom-ta-ra-ta! Boom-ta-ree! Hurrah, hurrah, ninety-three!" At. S. White, who has in his possession the key to the old stone school house
which was the original of the thirty-four school buildings now in the city,
exhibited his trophy to his many friends. Company H held a drill in the armory from 8:15 to 9:15, during which the gallery was crowded with spectators. |
