Anthony B. Mathews
(Grand Rapids Eagle, 1863)

Died at Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Saturday, April 18th, 1863, of Co. D, First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics.
A true friend, kind companion, a man of true worth and intelligence, beloved and respected by his associates, the Co. has by his death lost one of those members of whom it could be justly proud. Ever prompt to duty, staunch and loyal, the country has lost a true soldier. He was a resident of Berlin, Ottawa county, Mich., and leaves a wife and family to mourn his loww.
At a meeting of the officers and members of Co. D, the following preamble and resolutions were adopted:

Whereas, A useful and respected member of this Co. has by the hand of death, been removed from our midst; therefore,
Resolved, That while we deeply deplore the loss of one who has with us so long shared the toil and danger of war, we no less deeply and earnestly sympathize with the bereaved family.
Resolved, That as a further expression of our sympathy, and a slight token of our regard for the deceased, we present to her whom his untimely death has left widowed, and to those children thus made fatherless, a sum of money to be raised by voluntary contributions, from the officers and members of Co. D, and a committee be appointed to receive and forward the same.
Resolved, That the families of our deceased comrades will ever be to us objects of deep interest; and the same kind regard we have ever had for the departed, should be extended to those their death has left desolate.
At a subsequent meeting of the committee the following report was made:
To the Officers and Members of Co. D:
Your committee has received ninety dollars ($90), and forwarded the same agreeably to your previous resolutions.

J. M. Eggleston, Sec'y
